An Old Peorian Passes Away
(Peoria Herald, 17 jan 1894)

At 9 o'clock yesterday morning at the residence of her son-in-law, Amant Schnebelin, 524 Warren Street, Magdalena Strauel, widow of the late Sebastian Strauel, the well-known west bluff gardener, passed away in her 75th year. The deceased was born in Alsace, Germany, came to America in 1824 and settled in Peoria in 1856 where she has since resided. Five daughters, Mrs. Peter Staebler, Mrs. Sarah Kuepfert, Mrs. Amant Schneblin, Mrs. Benjamin Haungs, Mrs. H. J. Saupe and Val Kratzert, her son-in-law, all of this city, and S. Wendling, her brother, of Independence, Iowa, survive to mourn her loss. She was well known and highly respected by all who knew her, and was an active church worker, having for years been president of the ladies society of St. Joseph's church. The funeral will take place from St. Boniface church Monday morning where high mass will be held and the internment will be ay St. Joseph's cemetery.
