Tomb of Ramadheen Teelucksingh (1882-1914), Couva, Trinidad This magnificent marble monument is located in the Teelucksingh family enclosure in Couva. Ramadheen was son of Teelocksingh (1839-97) of India and elder brother of Sarran, the well-known politician. It is exquisitely detailed and executed in flawless white Carrara marble which has a fine molecular composition which lends itself to minute detail in sculpture. Michaelangelo , the great Renaissance artist, favoured this marble as did his predecessor Donatello and later, Bernini. This statue appears to have been a fairly popular grave monument among the wealthy in England and Continental Europe, as replicas of similar vintage can be seen in Kensal Green cemetery in London and Pere Lachaise in Paris. It must have cost a huge sum in 1914 when it was installed. Remember, this was the era before the motor-truck, so it would have been brought possibly by boat as far as the landing place at Orange bay, less than a mile away , and then hauled here by oxcart. It is a symbol of the wealth of this family and one of the most opulent grave markers in the island, rivaled only by a few in Lapeyrouse Cemetery, belonging to old families of the white planter elite. Residence
This home was built on property that was purchased after Teelucksingh's period of indenture. It burned down around 1913.
Note
Ramadheen was in England when his favorite brother, Harrack, was stricken with typhoid. He arrived home just in time to attend Harrack's death and grant his brother's dying wish to become a Christian.
Note
Ramadheen, who was impressed by the sophistication of his two sisters-in-law, insisted that his daughters become educated. After his death, his brother, Saran, who inherited responsibility for the family, pulled the women out of school.
Note
Arranged his brothers (Harrack and Saran)'s weddings to the Pritamsingh sisters (Mary and Popat).
Note
Owned property from Balmain Village to Couva.
Note
i visited the PRO (in kew) recently. i try and visit when i have spare time and spend most of my time looking through the trinidad royal gazette. i came across your ramadhin teelucksingh (though his name was spelt ramadeen teelucksing). it's probab ly nothing new but you can see my transcription at: http://www.genealogy.com/users/r/i/n/Kyle-S-Ring/FILE/0013page.html further along in the same newspaper it gave some more details which i noted down. they were as follows: Ramadeen Teelucksing - Shopkeeper in Sangre Grande on lands of Mrs. C. Miller having 2 doors leading to provision shop, 1 window to the west and 1 door leading into private room. Term of license - 12months - Spirituous liquors* --- * The entry was 1 line off. The location of Ramadeen Teelucksing's residence was California, and his licensed premises in Sangre Chiquite, lands of R. Foix
