I407 Georges Schnebelin His birth in 1824 in Bantzenheim is confirmed. He migrated at the age of 36 from Dessenheim to Peoria in October 1860 with his wife and 3 children (not 1861 as in our records). Prior to leaving Alsace he had worked as a customs employee (but had left this job some time before emigration) (listed as "ex préposé des douanes").
Note: Referenced by Eve Crowley.
Note
Lived in Limestone from at least 1880 to 1900 with his daughter, Kate Sornberger, and her husband John.
Note
Georges, who lived in Bartonville until the age of 97, and whose daughter Mary was the ancestress of most of the Wolschlag family there. He wore a full beard in the picture I have of the three brothers, and was called "Uncle Shorsh" by his nieces and nephews. This was an approximation of the French pronunciation of his name, "Jorj" or "Zhorzh," in contrast to the German "Gay-org," suggesting that French was his first language. Because Uncle Georges didn't speak much English, Grandpa wanted his children to learn enough German at least to greet him, but "they couldn't get their tongues around it." Aunt Kate, after long practice, forgot everything she'd learned when Uncle Georges arrived unexpectedly one day, and greeted him with, "Geh alang disaway," a phrase she was never allowed to forget.
Note
Lived in Limestone with daughter Hortense in 1900 and 1910.
Note
Schneblin is 94, But is Ready to Fight the Kaiser "If they gave me a good horse, I'd go fight the Germans, myself" says George Schneblin, who today celebrates his ninety-fourth birthday anniversary. Mr. Schneblin was in military service practically all of his younger days. He was born in France in 1824 and when he was twenty years of age he enlisted in the French army in which he served as cavalry blacksmith for seven years. Then he married Miss Mary Medzler and several years later he again served for a space of eight years as guardsman along the line between Germany and France. In 1861 he came to America and Settled in Limestone township, where he has made his home ever since as a farmer. He would have fought in the Civil war, but for an injury to his eye which occurred during his service in the old country and which necessitated his exemption from serving at this time. Mr. Schneblin is celebrating his birthday today at his home in Limestone with all of his children, who are Mrs. Mary Wolschlag, Mrs. Kate Sornberger, Mrs. Callaghan White and Mrs. Theresa Rogers. One of the joys of his life is the fact that the only grandson he has who is unmarried, enlisted last February in the national army and is now at Eagle Pass, Tex.
