Note
Dan Crowley said that a lot of Uncle Leo's votes "came from the cemetery."
Note
Leland J. Kennedy, an Illinois Representative from 1947-1955 and 1963-1975, mentioned Uncle Leo in his Oral History: Q: Back in 1947 did you find any particular blocs? Was there a division between... A: I didnt find it that way. The much-heralded West Side Bloc, that was there. Of course I guess there was the Republican bloc and the Democratic bloc. But they had such a tremendous majority, I think they were--when you have eight or ten--it might have been more than that. I'm going to see if I can give you that. It might make an interesting part of the interview. Q. Alright sir. (taping stopped for search in Blue Book, then resumed) A: Eighty to sixty-five. I didn't think it was that bad. I go down the list here. Hubert Considine who was a Democrat was the first chairman with me. Leo Crowley from Peoria, a Republican, was quite vocal. Q: Oh? Quite vocal in what way? A: Well about every way. (chuckles) Q: Oh really? A: I mean he liked to talk, he was an attorney and he was a good talker. Kind of a firebrand and I think he--well he was just a-- made an interesting talk, was a good man.
Note
Robert L. Burhans, Illinois State Representative from 1948-1966, described his views of Leo Crowley in his oral memoir in 1987. Some quotes: "Well there is nothing good I can say about the man. And since his daughter and his wife are now dead, I have no compuction about saying that he had a reputation for taking money...But Crowley was an excellent flamboyant orator, and he had a sharp tongue. Drank too much. Didn't pay his bills. And perhaps I would dignify him too much if I would say that he was a complete rascal and unprincipled scamp. (laughter)" "I will tell you he earned my undying enmity. It's one of the few people I really feel badly about...Couple of things that got into the paper, he said that I was a drinker son of wealthy parents who, well, "fumbled his way in an alcoholic stupor from Creve Coeur Club to the country club and back." Inflamatory stuff. That made my mother upset and for that I never forgave him. And later, when he was down and out and wanted a state job and finagled his way back in, I saw that he was discharged. That's one of the few acts of retribution in life that I can recall. But he offended me deeply. He hurt my mother's feelings. And I felt justified. He had some brothers that were pretty nice guys and asked me to let up on him. And I was tough and said no." "He had a labor following...I had no identifiable connection with the labor movement in any fashion he did (chuckles). His family, better than he was by far, ran a plumbing concern here." "There was a little maneuvering, you know who would get to talk first. The candidate that got to talk last could say anything he wanted without fear of retaliation. And I remember one time that--humorous now but didn't seem so at the time--that I'd gone before this congress of labor agents or whatever and said what I could and received a rather lukewarm reception and, well, he followed me and he really attacked me personally. He didn't talk about what he'd done or--and that I guess is another thing that offended me. He got out there and got his finger in the air and he got red in the face and shook his wattles and said, "You show me an honest lawyer and I'll show you a white blackbird!" Well, I thought that--I was glad to eliminate him. I did a real service for the people by getting his kind out. I have no compunction about saying that."
