Note | [Henry's] daughter, Clara, attended the Iere Home Finishing School at the age of 18 where her best friend was Ethel McCrorie (they are pictured together in the group shot I sent to you). Here, as a widower, Henry met Ethel and proposed to her. Ethel’s mother, Alice Bhagmania, told her to marry Henry, age 34, because as half-breed, she was unlikely to be wanted by either the Indians or the whites. Being mixed in those days was a liability. Therefore, at the age of 18, Ethel took on four children and Henry Laltoo. Her first child was my father, Ralph. In many ways, she was a modern woman. She could change spark plugs in their Model A Ford car, muck out the pig sty (she kept pigs to finance Uncle Joe in medical school in Bristol, England), preside over the Board of Directors of the Iere Home Finishing School, which she supported all her life, and unbeknownst to Henry, gave equal opportunity to other religious groups and even the obeah man when trouble prevailed. She brought up seven children, and me. At the age of 70, she travelled by plane to the U.S. for the first time, making several follow-up trips until her death in 1971.

It was taken when she was 18 years old. Her upkeep at the school was funded by Hugh McCrorie who always supported his children, even when he was absent from the island. |
