Note | Correspondence from Dr. Rosabelle Seesaran to Kyle Shea Ring |
Source | Genealogy of Kyle Shea Ring Text: Alice Bagmaniah was indentured at the Santa Rosa Sugar Estate in Arima around 1888. |
Note | My GtGt Grandma was originally called Bagmaniah, she was from somewhere in India, her parents had arranged a marriage for her however she wasn't happy with it. Her neighbour came to her in the middle of the night and to ld her to gather all her jewels and emigrate with her to Trinidad. So they both left. When they were on the boat Bagmaniah gave her jewels to the neighbour and asked her to look after them till they got to their destination. Once in Trinidad they were assigned to their respective estates and Bagmaniah (who was renamed Alice) never saw the neighbour or her jewels again!
Alice was assigned to a sugar estate in Arima around 1887, she started crying on being given a hoe to work and the overseer (a Scotsman called Hugh McCrorie) took pity on her and she was relegated to domestic duties. Alice and Hugh had two children together. Hugh emigrated to America and the Canadian Missionaries married Alice to a David Sampath (my GtGt Grandfather) who was a widower (with children of his own) from Tabaquite. They eventually moved south to Fyzabad where they purchased a plot of land and grew Cocoa. |
Note | Your great-grandmother Mary (I3009) said that she and her mother-in-law used to pick coffee and work on their estate in Fyzabad. My grandmother's post-partum depression after the birth of Leonard was considered lunacy and she spent a number of year s at St. Ann's Mental Hospital. On release she moved to Fyzabad where she died. Your Aunt Betty (I3063) said that she remembered sleeping with her when she died.
